Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar will play the lead role in Deepa Mehta's upcoming project 'Komagata Maru' which is based on a true-life voyage of an ill-fated passenger ship from India to Vancouver.
Hundreds of Indian passengers who boarded the 'Komagata Maru' ship in 1914 on a voyage to Vancouver were not allowed to enter Canada on discriminatory grounds.
The Dominion government did not permit passengers to disembark due to racist immigration laws and the vessel remained docked at the harbour for two months.
The ship was later forcibly sent back to India where the British police allegedly shot dead many passengers in Kolkata.
According to Mehta, the proposed film will highlight high level Canadian government intrigue, duplicity, racism, spying, military engagements, court battles, sedition and assassination. "This is an extremely important opportunity for me to reveal a significant moment in Canadian history and illustrate the steadfast bravery of the Sikh community who sacrificed so much to help create a more tolerant community within my adopted country," said Mehta in a statement.
Mehta originally intended Amitabh Bachchan to topline the USD 30 million drama, but had to back down because Bachchan didn't have the Canadian citizenship. 'Komagata Maru' is a government financed picture and requires a local lead as per the Canadian norms.
Kumar, who has a permanent resident status of Canada, stepped in to play the role of Gurdit Singh, a Sikh lawyer who represented the 376 passengers aboard the ship.
"I am not used to working with Oscar nominated directors so it is a great privilege for me to work with Deepa Mehta. The subject of this film has moved me, as it is a true representation and a testimony to human struggle for freedom, justice and equality. I want to portray this real life tragedy to the world identifying how injustice was done to innocent people," Akshay said.
"It's an honour for me to play one of the bravest Sikhs, Gurdit Singh, in this tragic forgotten moment in history. I salute those brave souls who sacrificed their lives for justice and equality", he said.
Hamilton-Mehta productions will produce the Canadian drama in association with Kumar's production, 'Hari Om' Entertainment. The shooting for the film will begin in September 2009.

PYAR KA SIDE EFFECT SEQUEL
It’s a sequel, not a remake. Producer Pritish Nandy is finally ready to start the Pyaar Ke Side Effects sequel, that too without the charming Rahul Bose whose portrayal of a casual, confused, commitment-phobic lover boy trying to win her ladylove back, made PKSE such an enduring rom-com of recent times. But,
Akshay Kumar was the first and the only choice of Nandy for the sequel.
And here is another jolt for the readers; the movie won’t star Mallika Sherawat . She reportedly said no to the project.
So it’s a PKSE sequel, minus Bose and Sherawat. Rather Sonam Kapoor is being considered for the female lead.
Director Saket Choudhary and Pritish Nandy have met Akshay with the script and the actor has liked the final copy. Akshay is quoted as saying in a media report, “The script is funny and interesting. Saket is a talented director and I am always looking for fresh talented directors to work with.”
So it will be Akki who will take forward the character of Sid. And Sonam will expectedly play Trisha. The actress has not yet been approached. Pritish will approach her once Akshay makes his dates available.
But the makers haven’t clarified if the movie will narrate a new story or will take forward the Sid-Trisha tale. We just hope they don’t spoil the sequel by glossing it over with big stars but no substance.

Finally Shirish Kunder is all set to make his ambitious project Joker early next year. The project which Shirish wanted to make immediately after Jaan-e-Mann could not take off for various reasons.
Considering that it was the project closest to Shirish’s heart, he tried making it for the last four years. However now finally things have now fallen into place and the film will start in January 2011 with Akshay Kumar playing the lead role.
Our source said, “Joker is a script which is very dear to Shirish. In fact he had planned to make it much before he made his debut with Jaan-e-Mann in 2006. However after the not-so-encouraging response to his debut film, things didn’t go as planned for Shirish.
He had written the script of Joker in 2003 and it’s a film with the Joker as the superhero and has a heavy dose of special effects and stunts.
After things didn’t work out between Akshay Kumar and Shirish Kunder four years ago, Shirish planned the film with Salman Khan. However the talks didn’t materialise then. There were also reports that John Abraham had signed the film.
But Shirish kept mum and was quietly working on his project. In between Shirish was also supposed to make a film for Ashtavinayak Cine Vision and SRK; both projects never saw the light of day.
Finally he surprised everyone when he announced Tees Maar Khan as a producer with wife Farah Khan directing and Akshay Kumar being signed as the lead actor.
Now Shirish has tied hands with a corporate house and Akshay Kumar will also co-produce the film. The film will go on the floors in January next year.”
When contacted Shirish Kunder said, “All I can say is that proper announcements with all details will be made jointly with all the parties concerned.”
